Welcome for UK Government's Energy Independence Bill

Consumer Scotland statement following announcement of new legislation.

Chief Executive of Consumer Scotland Sam Ghibaldan said:

“We welcome the introduction of the Energy Independence Bill and the focus on delivering a fairer energy system for households.

“Many of the measures announced today reflect issues Consumer Scotland has consistently highlighted, including strengthening Ofgem's role as a consumer champion, enabling the ability to design and deliver targeted support for low-income and vulnerable households, improving standards and oversight in the energy retrofit market, and helping people reduce their bills through warmer, more energy-efficient homes.

“The measures in this Bill recognise that the energy transition is a consumer protection priority. Energy is an essential service and consumers need confidence that the market is working in their interests.

"We look forward to engaging with the UK Government, Ofgem and other partners as the Bill progresses to help ensure these reforms deliver tangible benefits for consumers across Scotland.”
