Consumer Scotland statement on UK Budget

Welcome for measures to reduce energy bills but more work on affordability needed

Responding to the UK Budget announcement on energy bills Head of Energy Markets for Consumer Scotland Barry Coughlan said:

“Consumer Scotland welcomes the measures to reduce energy bills announced in the Budget.

"Many households find it difficult to pay for the energy they need, so a £150 reduction is welcome news.

“Moving some of the costs of industry levies off electricity bills will also help support wider goals to electrify the economy.

“However, even with today’s announced cuts energy bills are still too high for many households.

“More work is needed to ensure that energy affordability supports are improved, either by enhancing the Warm Home Discount or creating new mechanisms such as a social tariff.

“And we must not lose sight of the need to improve household energy efficiency, which is key for a cheaper, secure and sustainable energy future.”
